Annie Campbell considered herself to be helplessly ordinary. Outshined by each of her four siblings, she slipped behind their happiness and lived in their shadows.
Then, in one swift stroke, the family’s joy was shattered. Their closeness unraveled. Their intimacy extinguished. Their future bleak.
Except for that one ray of hope—Annie. The one with her heart in her hand ready to give. The one who was there to help. Annie provided the comfort the others needed. She endured and, in doing so, distinguished herself as the light strong enough to lead the others through their darkness. Her strength was extraordinary.
This story will envelop you with its rapture. You will experience Annie’s delight as she witnesses her average abilities unfold in astonishing ways.
Reader Reviews
“No supervillains, no clichés, no plot contrivances, just people who felt genuinely real.”
“I felt swept up into their world and held close.”
“This is written like a memoir, so real and moving that I often had to remind myself that this is a work of fiction.”

Cry Before Supper Women Fiction of Family Tragedy edition by Julia Rose Grey Literature Fiction eBooks

Cry Before Supper's vivid imagery takes us to the Pennsylvania countryside where we embrace the likable characters of the Campbell family as they adjust to a new life. Tension builds and we know *something* is going to rattle, if not shatter, the Campbell family even as we delight in the daffodil and scent filled springtime of Annie's youth.

This is a wonderful story about the triumph of a family torn apart by tragedy but held together by the loyal determination of one family member. Is our hero brave with great strength of character, or had she nothing better to do? Being the rock of the family... it ain't for sissies.

Cry Before Supper Women Fiction of Family Tragedy edition by Julia Rose Grey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Cry Before Supper is both haunting and hopeful. Ms Gray condenses a great deal of time and detail into a mere 250 or so pages. However, no thread is lost, the characters are exactly drawn, including the delightful dog, and the action moves right along. This excellent first novel, which I hope will be followed by others, is reminiscent of the Aeneid in that its structure approaches poetry. Due to the young narrator and her buddy-pal sister, it also has a tinge of To Kill a Mockingbird. The story line glides as seductively as a Bond thriller. Yet if the author has inadvertently channeled any predecessors, I don't see it. The book is fresh and new. Upon opening it, I thought I would read as far as the on-line excerpt for a start, but I could not put it down! Read through to the end and savored every word.
Brava, Ms Gray!
This is the kind of book I love and for once I tried to read it slowly to savor it and to avoid reaching the end. I am always fascinated, especially at this point in my life (I am around the age these children would be now) by how other people grew up and by families, which I am sadly lacking. The characters in books become my circle of acquaintances and friends. And these are more than worthy. Through the eyes of Annie we meet a unique family of four generations and a community of friends and helpers. Annie became more and more endearing and quietly courageous the longer I got to know her and I was truly grateful for the ending which left me smiling and yes, dare I say happy. No supervillains, no cliches, no plot contrivances, just people who felt genuinely real.

I have read other books where a tragedy happens to a family and usually it is the center of everything, overwhelming and dramatic. Here life happens and people deal with it, day by day like real people do. It isn't about one event being a defining moment but about character and relationships and coping. I felt swept up into their world and held close. I envy them.
You know, I'm going to preface this review by saying, there's a massive shortage in literary fiction. With trends rising and falling faster than an amusement park roller coaster, very few classical genres and styles keep hold of the market, and that's a true shame.

Sure, we all know the classics, some we love, some we read because we had to, some we never read but can still quote easily (War and Peace... come on now, you know you can) but there hasn't been such love and adoration for a modern piece in a very long time.

Now the books have to have some kind of "hook". They have to have impossibly and unrealistically attractive characters, over the top powers, supernatural elements, and most times, they have to contain massive amounts of explicit sex or violence.

I have to tell you, when I picked up this book and started to read it, I let out a huge sigh of relief. I was hesitant at first, the story is told in first person but I was immediately hooked and immediately in love with the characters as they all rapidly came into play.

Normally I liked to give a little insight into the book, to tell you a little of what happened, but with this one, I'm not going to. I will say that it was amazing and believe me, I'm going to be reading it again. I don't like to compare books to other books, I feel that all books have something unique to offer, and should stand alone, but if I had to give you some reference, I'd say that this book could easily become this generation's Little Women.

The plot isn't the same, not even close, but it immediately struck me the way Little Women did the first time I picked that book up. The connection to the characters, the voice, the events, they stick with you, and they don't need glittering vampires, werewolves with chiseled abs, or some ditzy woman that the entire world wants to get into bed.

If I could make one critique, and honestly it's a small one, is the indentation on the kindle. I had this book on PDF, but I always check the kindle sample to see how the format looks in case it's something I need to warn about, and I just noticed that it formatted a little light on the paragraph indents than I normally like. Now, there might be a setting on the kindle to fix that, I'm not as tech savvy as most, so it's probably something I did.

Otherwise, the book is a five stars, without question, and if you, like me, really miss those rich, fantastic literary fiction tales, pick this book up. Now. And even if you don't, pick it up anyway because it deserves to be read.
I loved this book and found it thrilling that I know the author!
In this her debut novel, the author, who I know personally, has worked hard to weave a bittersweet and engaging tale of one family's journey complete with tragedy and triumph.
This book was such a pleasure to read. It reminded me of my father and his sisters home and childhood. This family was very caring about each other, especially their special needs brother, Michael and his relationship with his grandmother. A very enjoyable read. I would love a sequel.
Okay, the editing is pretty good and it starts as a decent story for a couple of chapters despite the stilted disjointed writing. And the these characters are wooden. Despite plenty of description, not one of these characters seems real. I persevered to the end but I would suggest you not bother with this book at all.
